History

Modern Transportation can trace its heritage in bulk materials transportation and handling to the coal mining industry in Western Pennsylvania in the 1950’s.   After developing a strong position in the coal sector, Modern moved into the transportation of coal for customers in that region.

In 1987 a trans-load operator, ultimately a sister company to Modern, needed a carrier that could offer bulk delivery from a rail trans-load yard near Butler, PA. That effort proved to be the foundation of Modern Transportation.

In the 35 years since that initial project, we’ve grown into an industry leader in bulk material logistics and trucking.  In recent years we’ve expanded into liquids and chemicals, as well as petroleum-based products.  Today’s Modern operates two dozen terminals and our lanes traverse more than 30 states. Modern Transportation’s growth and success can be directly attributed to hard work, an intense focus on customers and safety, and a relentless pursuit of partnership opportunities with mineral producers and manufacturers.

In fact, that first customer cited here, the one with whom we initiated service in March of 1987, remains one of our largest customers… to this day!  Across decades and across generations of company representatives.  We’re as proud of that fact as any we can point to – and it points to the kind of relationship you can expect when you work with Modern Transportation.
